Lipoedema of the scalp is a rare condition of unknown aetiology. It is characterized by a thick, boggy, oedematous scalp which may reach double its normal thickness due to expansion of the subcutaneous fat layer. Varying degrees of hair loss may accompany these changes (lipoedematous alopecia). No associated medical or physiological abnormalities have been identified. The primary pathology is likely to be related to abnormal lymphatics. |
