A severe form of genital herpes caused by an initial infection with Herpes simplex and often accompanied by constitutional symptoms. In addition to the vulva, the vagina and cervix are commonly involved. The majority of cases are due to Herpes simplex virus type 2 but the condition may also be caused by type 1 virus.
