Atopic eruption of pregnancy is the commonest inflammatory skin problem associated with pregnancy. In contrast to other pregnancy dermatoses, it usually manifests itself within the first two trimesters. Although there is no history of previous atopic eczema in 80% of cases, patients often report having sensitive skin and/or a personal or family history of atopic disease. Most patients have elevated immunoglobulin E levels. Clinically the eruption may be obviously eczematous or appear as a widespread eruption of irritable papules (prurigo of pregnancy). |
