Cutaneous botryomycosis is a rare opportunistic infection of the skin and soft tissues characterized by chronic purulent and granulomatous lesions in which the organisms form granules composed of bacterial masses. It is most commonly associated with Staphylococcus aureus but other organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been implicated. It often affects extremities and may be misdiagnosed as mycetoma. Although it has been reported in association with impaired immunity from, for instance, HIV infection, diabetes mellitus and high-dose corticosteroid therapy, it can occur in apparently immunocompetent individuals. |
