Infantile perianal streptococcal cellulitis is due to infection of the perianal skin of infants by Group A beta-haemolytic streptococci. Infants and young children appear to be more susceptible to this than older age groups. It manifests as sharply demarcated intense erythema with variable oedema and oozing of perianal skin. The penis or vulva may sometimes be involved as well. It is often painful and may impede normal defaecation. It is an important cause of a rash in the napkin area of infants. |
