Foetal varicella syndrome occurs following maternal varicella infection, typically between the 13th and 20th week of pregnancy. Transplacental transfer of Varicella Zoster virus results in foetal viraemia and subsequent cutaneous dissemination. Fetal varicella syndrome is characterized by low birth weight and a wide range of abnormalities involving the skin, central nervous system, eyes, skeleton, gastrointestinal tract and genito-urinary system. Amongst the manifold abnormalities which may occur are cutaneous hypoplasia and scarring, mental retardation, seizures, cortical atrophy, deafness, microphthalmia, cataract, limb hypoplasia, jejunal dilatation, microcolon and neurogenic bladder. |
