Catatonia induced by psychoactive substances, including medications is a syndrome of primarily psychomotor disturbances that develops during or soon after substance intoxication or withdrawal or during the use of a psychoactive medication (e.g., antipsychotic medications, amphetamines, phencyclidine or PCP). The syndrome is characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of several symptoms such as stupor; catalepsy; waxy flexibility; mutism; negativism; posturing; mannerisms; stereotypies; psychomotor agitation; grimacing; echolalia and echopraxia. The specified substance, as well as the amount and duration of its use, must be capable of producing catatonic symptoms. |
